North Korea soldier makes daring defection to South Korea across JSA

판문점 JSA초소서 북한군1명 귀순…北총격 받고 긴급후송 A North Korean soldier defects to the South in the most unexpected way: Crossing the border at the heavily guarded Joint Security Area. As troops stationed in the frontline are believed to be chosen for their loyalty, this could severely bruise the regime's military pride. He was shot at by men from his side, but was picked up by South Korean soldiers and was taken to the hospital. For details on the daring escape, we turn to our Kwon Jang-ho The Joint Security Area located on the border between the two Koreas and the only place where soldiers from the two sides stand face-to-face. And at three-thirty-one PM on Monda, a lone North Korean soldier ran from a guard post on the northern side, and crossed over the Military Demarcation Line into South Korean territory. The soldier suffered from gunshot wounds to his shoulder and elbow from North Korean forces while defecting. Upon hearing the shots, South Korean soldiers raised the alarm, but the defector was not discovered until 25 minutes later, collapsed on the ground, 50-meters from the border and bleeding from his wounds. (Korean) Our soldiers safely retrieved the defector, and urgently evacuated him to hospital to treat his injuries. He was airlifted by a United Nations Command helicopter to Ajou University Medical Center in Suwon, just south of Seoul, where he underwent surgery. The defector is thought to be in his twenties or thirties, and wore a uniform of low rank. Defecting through the JSA is extremely rare, with only two previous instances in 1998 and 2007. South Korean authorities have reassured that there was no altercation between South and North Korean soldiers, but added that Seoul will remain alert to any possible provocations. It's been almost two months since North Korea last carried out a ballistic missile test, or any other provocation, and many have hoped that this signalled an easing of tensions on the peninsula. It's currently unclear what response Pyongyang will give to Monday's incident. Kwon Jang-ho, Arirang News. Seoul's Joint Chiefs of Staff says that at around 1PM on Monday the soldier crossed from a guard post on the northern side of the area and was picked up by South Korean soldiers. However, he was shot by North Korean soldiers on the way, and he has been rushed to hospital. The Joint Chiefs have said the military remains on alert for any provocations from the North. Meanwhile, a U.S. citizen was caught by South Korean authorities trying to make the reverse trip across the border. The 58 year-old man from Louisiana was found trespassing in a military-controlled area near the border in the county of Yeoncheon . He had arrived in South Korea 3 days ago, and was attempting to enter North Korea for what are being described as 'political purposes.' [Anchor Lead] A North Korean soldier defected from the North on Thursday by crossing over an eastern section of the military demarcation line. The South Korean military is investigating the case to find out the soldier's escape route and reason of his defection. [Pkg] The eastern front is located in a steep mountainous area in Hwacheon, Gangwon-do Province. At 10:03 a.m. Thursday the South Korean military guard spotted a North Korean soldier who had crossed over the military demarcation line. The initial response squad was dispatched immediately. After the soldier announced his intention to defect from the North, he was taken to the general outpost. At 10:12 a.m. the North Korean soldier safely passed through the South's barbed wire gate. This all happened just nine minutes after he entered South Korean territory. [Soundbite] Seo Wook(Mjr. Gen., Joint Chiefs of Staff) : "The defected soldier is of a high rank (on par with South Korean private first class). He was wearing a military uniform but was unarmed." The military is investigating the exact route and motivation of the soldier's escape. It's also closely monitoring the North Korean military to prepare for any contingencies. The first soldier, who was of a high rank, escaped from North Korea in June of last year through the same area. The South Korean military points to severe human rights violations in the North Korean military as the reason behind soldier defections. The soldier who defected last year said he decided to escape because he couldn't endure army violence anymore. The psychological effect of South Korea's loud speaker broadcasts in the inter-Korean border area cannot be ruled out, either. As more soldiers and civilians try to escape, North Korea has planted a large number of mines near the military demarcation line to prevent defections.

(25 Jul 1996) Korean/Nat A North Korean man has defected to neighbouring South Korea by - walking through the heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone separating the two countries. Park Chol-ho emerged from the fog and drizzle to be paraded before the world's media after apparently breaching one of the world's most heavily fortified borders. He spoke of severe food shortages in the North. The latest North Korean defector was spotted early Wednesday morning by South Korean soldiers emerging the gloom and drizzle surrounding the Demilitarized Zone. Carrying only the clothes on his back, Park was only too happy to show the assembled media the contents on his shoulder bag a rubber tube in case if he had to cross a river. 41-year-old Park Chol-ho said constant hunger drove him from his homeland. A labourer for the North Korean army, Park was in charge of supplying food for North Korean soldiers. Park spoke of widespread hunger in his homeland. SOUNDBITE: "As far as I know, a North Korean dies of hunger every two or three days on average. I heard South Korea was far better off, so I decided to defect here before I die of hunger." SUPERCAPTION: Park Chol-Ho, defector Recent defectors have spoken of severe food shortages and scores of North Koreans dying of starvation in the seclusive Communist country. Last summer North Korea was hit by large floods which devastated food supplies. Park is the 27th North Korean defector to cross the border this year last year, 45 North Koreans defected to the South. While the South Korean authorities were quick to maximise the propaganda value of the latest defector, the army is anxious to discover how a lone man managed to penetrate one of the world's most heavily fortified stretches of land. 판문점 JSA초소서 북한군1명 귀순…北총격 받고 긴급후송 A day of high drama at the inter-Korean border on Monday. A North Korean soldier pierced through the world's most heavily guarded border to the South in the unexpected way possible,... fleeing across the Joint Security Area at Panmunjeom. The soldier was shot and critically injured by his fellow comrades, but the South Korean military managed to quickly evacuate him to hospital for treatment. Kwon Jang-ho reports. The Joint Security Area located on the border between the two Koreas and the only place where soldiers from the two sides stand face-to-face. And at three-thirty-one PM on Monday, a lone North Korean soldier ran from a guard post on the northern side, and crossed over the Military Demarcation Line into South Korean territory. In yet another incident, a North Korean soldier fled across the world's most heavily militarised border to defect to the South. The South Korean guards fired up to 20 warning shots at North Korean troops who were searching for the defected soldier. However, according to the South Korean defense ministry, surveillance equipment detected the soldier through heavy fog just after 8 AM and no shots were fired. Last month, another North Korean soldier suffered critical gunshot wounds during a similar dash across the demilitarised zone. He was shot at by his fellow North Korean soldiers and recovered by South Korean troops, and later taken to a hospital. Reason behind the latest defection on Thursday is still being investigated. A North Korean soldier defected to the South earlier this morning by crossing the land border between the two Koreas. Currently that military personnel is in custody and undergoing questioning. Kim Hyun-bin tells us more. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said Thursday... that a North Korean soldier crossed over the military demarcation line at around 10 a.m. It is the first time since June of last year that a North Korean soldier has defected in this way. The military said that a South Korean soldier on guard at a general outpost first spotted the soldier at 10:03 a.m. At 10:12 a.m., the soldier was escorted by South Korean troops to base. The soldier was unarmed and there were no clashes in the process. The military is currently questioning him about his reasons for defecting. The South Korean military says that there are no unusual movements north of the border so far, however South Korean military bases on the border have strengthened their security and surveillance activities. Since 2010, 60 North Korean civilians and military personnel have crossed the border either by land or by sea using the Military Demarcation Line or the maritime Northern Limit Line.
