"As a woman in the industry, I was impacted by the visual representation of male dominance in a Toronto Life article featuring the 'Kings of Condo.' It sparked a realization that it was time to showcase the incredible women working in development and related fields," Cook shared in an interview with Now Toronto.
Empowering Women in Trades and Construction
Reina Condos goes beyond being a symbol of female empowerment; it actively encourages women to enter traditionally male-dominated industries. According to the Government of Canada, women made up only 8% of trades-related professionals in 2024. The project aims to challenge these gender stereotypes and provide a platform for women to excel in fields like construction, engineering, and development.
Cook emphasizes the importance of exposing more women to these opportunities, ensuring they feel welcomed and supported. "While we acknowledge the hard work of men in the industry, we aspire to create a more balanced environment where women can thrive and contribute," she said.
A Design for Everyone
Despite its focus on female leadership, Reina Condos is designed to cater to a diverse range of residents. The project's tagline, 'Designed by women, built for everyone,' reflects its inclusive nature. The development team, comprising all women, conducted extensive consultations to understand the needs and preferences of various demographics, from teenagers to seniors.
"We engaged with thousands of contributors, seeking insights from children as young as five to understand their vision of an ideal living space," Cook revealed. "We also held design competitions with university students and collaborated with the Girl Guides to gather ideas from teens. Additionally, we listened to the experiences of seniors and how their needs evolve over time."
As a result, Reina Condos offers a wide range of amenities, including larger units, expansive outdoor spaces, 5,100 square feet of interior amenities, ample natural light, and extra storage. This thoughtful design approach ensures that the building caters to the needs of all residents, regardless of gender or background.
